Communications Intern

Overview

We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Communications Intern to support our communications staff. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience within an NHL organization, contributing to various aspects of media relations and content creation. The intern will play a key role in preparing for the upcoming season, including major events like the NHL Draft, Development Camp, and Free Agency.

Key Responsibilities & Duties

  • Content Creation & Editing: Assist with the writing and editing of crucial team publications, primarily the annual Media Guide, along with press releases, media advisories, and other written materials as required.
  • Archive Management: Manage daily news clippings, assist with the maintenance and updating of comprehensive news, photo, and physical archives.
  • Media Relations Support: Maintain and regularly update media distribution lists to ensure accurate and timely communication with journalists and outlets.
  • Event Preparation: Provide critical assistance in the development of detailed media guides specifically for the NHL Draft and Development Camp.
  • On-Site Support: Offer direct support to PR staff by assisting with media requests and logistics during key events such as Development Camp.
  • General Staff Support: Provide additional administrative and communications support to the staff as needed, particularly during busy periods like Free Agency.

As a Communications Intern, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Understand Industry Practices: Gain a comprehensive understanding of the practices and processes employed by an NHL Communications department in preparation for and during a professional sports season.
  • Enhance Writing Skills: Develop and refine your writing competency by composing professional press releases and contributing content to essential media guides.

Internship Details

  • Hours: 15-20 intern hours available each week.
  • Timeline: May – August (Summer Internship).

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Academic Status: Must be currently enrolled in college; Junior or Senior standing preferred.
  • Majors: Journalism or Communications major strongly encouraged.
  • Experience: Sports information experience is preferred.
  • College Credit: Must be able to receive college credit for the internship.
  • Technical Proficiency: Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel). Experience with Adobe InDesign is a significant plus.
  • Communication Skills: Possess excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Writing & Editing: Demonstrate strong writing and editorial abilities with a keen eye for detail.
