Job Description

Job Title: College Student Intern – District 3 Support

Organization: The City of College Park

Department/Team: District 3, in collaboration with Council Members Oates and Ranker

Internship Purpose:

The intern will primarily support District 3 by assessing the status of properties, mainly residential, to identify if they are owner-occupied, vacant, or used as rental units. This critical information will be cross-referenced with City databases to ensure proper permitting, with a particular focus on occupancy permits, and to inform property owners of applicable permit requirements.

Key Responsibilities and Projects:

  • Assist with the assessment of residential property status (owner-occupied, vacant, rental units) within District 3.
  • Cross-reference property status data with City databases to verify proper permitting, especially occupancy permits.
  • Support efforts to inform property owners about applicable permit requirements.
  • Contribute to improving communication within District 3 through outreach to residents (including University of Maryland students), boards and commissions, council members, and other stakeholders.
  • Facilitate the flow of information across various platforms and audiences to foster greater resident engagement and participation.
  • Develop and enhance place-making resources by cataloging City and County assets (e.g., public properties, playgrounds, public art installations, farmers markets, bike repair stations) with photographs, descriptions, and links to Google Maps and Apple Maps.
  • Review advertisements for residential properties in District 3 to identify potential violations of County regulations regarding the maximum number of unrelated individuals permitted to occupy a rental residence.

Essential Skills:

  • Proficiency in basic office software.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented.
  • Capable of managing multiple tasks effectively.

Qualifications:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear written and electronic materials and communicate effectively in person and by telephone.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize time-sensitive assignments.
  • Ability to review and evaluate reports and data for accuracy and compliance.

Education Requirement:

Applicants must be pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree from a college or university.

Time Commitment:

  • Total commitment: 75 hours
  • Anticipated completion date: May 7, 2026

Compensation:

  • Undergraduate students: $20 per hour
  • Graduate students: $25 per hour
