Department Overview: Policy, Research and International Affairs

AARP’s Policy, Research and International Affairs division leads the development and communication of AARP’s public policies, research, and insights on issues critical to people 50-plus. This internship specifically falls within the Office of Policy Development & Integration (OPDI).

Job Summary

AARP’s policy team is seeking a Law School Intern to contribute to the analysis and development of public policies that underpin AARP’s mission. Working within the Office of Policy Development & Integration (OPDI), you will actively participate in the policy integration process, researching and assessing public policies in the marketplace. Your work will span AARP’s three core issue areas: economic (savings/retirement security including workplace benefits, employment, and low-income assistance programs); health (Medicare, Medicaid, prescription drugs, long-term services and supports, and caregiving); and consumer (financial services, elder abuse prevention, utilities, livable communities, housing, and transportation). Additionally, you will provide support in the policy development process by researching and recommending policies across these areas. This is a paid internship with an anticipated start date of June 2026, running through the end of the year.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct objective legal and policy analysis and research of major federal, state, and local issues related to AARP’s health, economic, and consumer portfolios.
  • Write concise and well-reasoned memos, reports, and content for AARP’s online Policy Book, as well as for OPDI’s policy integration analysis of emerging policy and legal issues affecting consumers in the marketplace.
  • Gather, organize, and analyze policy input from various stakeholders, including staff, volunteers, and members.
  • Provide support to OPDI colleagues with other tasks, such as outreach and the execution of remote and in-person events.
  • Participate actively in team meetings and strategy discussions.

Qualifications

  • Must be currently enrolled in a degree program at an accredited law school as a graduate or professional student, and remain academically enrolled throughout the entire internship period.
  • Demonstrated experience in public policy and legal analysis.
  • Possess strong writing abilities, including the capacity to summarize complex topics succinctly and clearly.
  • Must be organized, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple projects under tight deadlines.
  • Exhibit excellent legal analysis, research, and writing skills, alongside meticulous attention to detail and the ability to work on multiple projects concurrently under staff supervision.

Compensation and Benefits

  • The hourly compensation range is $18 for undergraduates, $21 for graduate students, and $28 for Ph.D. candidates.
  • Internships are non-exempt positions and are not eligible for employee benefits.
