About CFR Internships

CFR’s Blavatnik and Robina Franklin Williams internships offer selected interns the invaluable opportunity to receive training in the field of foreign policy. These programs also provide essential skills training in areas such as writing, research, program planning, and much more.

The Role: Intern, Data Visualization

As a nonpartisan organization committed to informing and educating diverse audiences about global issues and foreign policy choices, CFR recognizes the importance of continually engaging the next generation of digital talent. The Data Visualization Intern’s fresh perspective will be invaluable as CFR navigates the ever-changing multimedia landscape, helping to continually mature the way complex issues are visually communicated.

Major Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Create compelling visual representations of complex data sets to aid in the understanding of key foreign policy issues.
  • Collect and analyze data using tools like Excel or R/Python.
  • Design data visualizations using tools like Adobe Illustrator, Figma, and Datawrapper.
  • Assist with web development to create interactive graphics.
  • Develop engaging visual content for CFR’s social media channels, video, and email.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Undergraduate or graduate student who has completed coursework or has experience in visual communication design, data visualization, data journalism, or a related field.
  • Coursework Requirement: All applicants should have completed the equivalent of four semesters of college coursework (not including AP classes in high school) by the time they begin an internship.
  • Required Experience: Experience with Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets.
  • Preferred Experience:
    • Experience with Datawrapper
    • Adobe Creative Suite, including Illustrator
    • Python/R
    • Figma
    • JavaScript (D3.js, ObservableHQ)
    • Previous experience working in a newsroom
  • Key Skills: Strong attention to detail and resourcefulness.
