Job Description

About Modular: Revolutionizing AI Infrastructure

At Modular, we are on a mission to revolutionize AI infrastructure by systematically rebuilding the AI software stack from the ground up. Our team, composed of industry leaders and experts, is dedicated to building cutting-edge, modular infrastructure that significantly simplifies AI development and deployment. By rethinking the complexities inherent in AI systems, we empower everyone to unlock AI’s full potential and address some of the world’s most pressing challenges.

If you’re passionate about shaping the future of AI and creating tools that make a real difference in people’s lives, we want you on our team. We encourage you to explore our culture and careers to understand our collaborative work environment and core values.

The Internship Opportunity: Security Team

As an intern on the Security team, you will play a crucial role in enabling Modular engineers to use AI tools and AI-assisted coding tools safely and effectively. Your primary focus will be on building essential guardrails, secure integrations, and internal security tooling. This work is vital to ensure our teams can move faster with AI without inadvertently exposing sensitive data, introducing supply chain risk, or weakening critical access controls.

Key Projects and Responsibilities Will Include:

  • Implementing secure integrations for AI coding tools (e.g., IDEs, code review assistants, chat tools) to safeguard proprietary code and sensitive data.
  • Developing robust policies and technical controls governing data transmission to AI systems, including practical enforcement mechanisms like redaction, allowlists, auditing, and approval workflows.
  • Crafting automation and streamlined workflows to facilitate secure AI usage for developers, such as secure-by-default configurations, self-serve access requests, and comprehensive logging and monitoring.
  • Collaborating closely with Platform Engineering to seamlessly integrate security controls into developer tooling, CI/CD pipelines, and internal platforms, ensuring smooth and scalable adoption.
  • Defining and tracking key metrics for the adoption, safety, and effectiveness of security measures, including usage with guardrails enabled, policy violations caught, time-to-approve access, and incident trends.

Location & Work Model:

Candidates based in the United States are welcome to apply. To foster growth and collaboration, all interns will work in a hybrid capacity at our Los Altos, CA office, requiring a minimum of 2 days per week on-site. Relocation assistance will be provided for out-of-state candidates.

What You Will Gain: Invaluable Learning Experiences

  • Practical insights into how security teams build scalable enablement programs that empower engineers without hindering development velocity.
  • Expertise in designing sophisticated guardrails for AI and AI-assisted coding tools, striking a critical balance between usability, privacy, and risk mitigation.
  • A deep understanding of measuring the effectiveness of security controls through clear signals and robust feedback loops.

Who You Are: Desired Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD degree with an anticipated graduation date no later than Spring 2027.
  • Demonstrated experience with C++ or Python.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to effectively translate complex security requirements into clear, developer-friendly guidance.
  • A detail-oriented approach and the ability to thrive and adapt in a fast-paced environment.
  • A strong, demonstrated interest in AI developer tools and a passion for practical security within real-world engineering workflows.
  • Creativity and curiosity for solving complex problems, a team-oriented attitude that fosters effective collaboration, and a strong alignment with Modular’s culture.

What Modular Brings To The Table: Our Commitments To You

  • An Amazing Team: Join a progressive, agile team comprised of some of the industry’s best engineering and product leaders.
  • Competitive Compensation: We offer very strong compensation packages, including stock options, tailored to enable you to focus on your best work.
  • Engaging Team Building Events: Participate in regular team onsites and local meetups in Los Altos, CA, fostering collaboration and camaraderie.

Working at Modular will enable you to grow quickly as you collaborate alongside incredibly motivated and talented people who uphold high standards, possess a growth mindset, and are dedicated to truly changing the world.

Compensation & Application Note:

The final salary range for the successful applicant will be determined by a variety of permissible, non-discriminatory job-related factors, including but not limited to education, training, work experience, business needs, or market demands.
