NVA Veterinary Externship Experience

About the Opportunity:
An externship at an NVA hospital, such as the May Veterinary Clinic, offers students a unique and invaluable opportunity to immerse themselves in the day-to-day operations of a veterinary practice. This program is designed to provide comprehensive, hands-on clinical experience within a supportive and high-standard medical environment.

Key Responsibilities & Learning Experiences:
Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians, gaining practical experience and developing crucial skills across various aspects of veterinary medicine. This includes:
Gathering patient histories: Learning to effectively collect vital information from clients.
Performing physical exams: Developing proficiency in conducting thorough examinations.
Creation of treatment plans: Participating in the development of comprehensive care strategies.
Diagnostics: Understanding and utilizing various diagnostic tools and procedures.
Dentistry services: Gaining exposure to and experience in veterinary dental care.
Observing/Assisting or Performing surgical procedures: Direct involvement in surgical settings, commensurate with skill and comfort levels.
Medical management of patients: Learning to oversee and adjust patient care throughout their treatment.

Skill Development:
Beyond clinical proficiencies, student externs will have dedicated opportunities to enhance their communication skills by interacting with:
• The entire medical team.
• Support staff.
• Clients, fostering strong professional relationships.

Program Duration:
Most externship experiences at May Veterinary Clinic typically range from two to eight weeks, with flexibility based on both student availability and hospital scheduling needs.

Eligibility:
All Veterinary students, regardless of their current class year, are strongly encouraged to apply and participate in NVA externships.

Stipend Information:
A travel/living expense stipend is available for eligible participants.
Eligibility: Veterinary students who are currently in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for this stipend.
