Job Description

This position offers a unique opportunity for a new graduate nurse to begin their career in a leading academic medical center. The program is designed to provide comprehensive training and support to transition into a Registered Nurse role on a pediatric general care unit.

### Job Summary

This is a 12-week internship program specifically tailored to prepare a new Graduate Nurse for a Registered Nurse (RN) position on a general care pediatric unit.

The orientation structure includes:
• A combination of educational sessions
Precepted bedside clinical experience

Key Commitment Requirement:
• A two (2) year commitment is required for candidates hired through this internship program.
• This commitment entails working a minimum of 30 hours/week (0.75 Full-Time Equivalent – FTR).

This internship is a collaborative effort between 12 West, 11 West, and 12 East pediatric units. Candidates will have the opportunity for unit selection during the interview process.
• Group and unit-based education will be provided.
• Precepted bedside experience will take place on the selected onboarding unit.

This posting aims to hire a graduate nurse internship cohort with a start date to be determined in July, 2026.
• Flexibility in weekly hours will be available, ranging from 32-40 hours per week.

### Brief Descriptions Of Each Unit

12 West Mott: A 32-bed pediatric medical-surgical unit caring for patients from infancy to young adulthood.
Primary services: Orthopedic surgery, trauma, rehabilitation, nephrology, urology, kidney transplant, neurology, neurosurgery, and endocrinology.
• Notably, up to 10 beds on this unit can be used for stable pediatric patients requiring mechanical ventilation.

11 West: A 32-bed unit that is an integral part of the Michigan Congenital Heart Center.
• Includes up to 12 moderate care beds for patients needing closer monitoring and observation.
• Provides family-centered care to pediatric cardiology and cardiac surgery patients, ranging in age from newborn to young adult.

12 East: A 32-bed Pediatric Acute Care Unit providing comprehensive care.
Primary focus: Gastrointestinal (GI), pulmonary, pediatric surgery, pediatric burn, and neonatal populations.
• Known for its energetic, team-oriented environment and commitment to family-centered care. The unit embraces a “fish” philosophy, promoting mutual support among staff.

Hourly Range for Registered Nurses:
$41.78-$64.81/hour

Shift Differentials:
• Evening Shift Differential: $3.00 / hour
• Night Shift Differential: $4.00 / hour

• Night Shift Weekend Differential: $6.90 / hour

### Nursing Specific Info

Salary & Nursing Framework Level:
• This UMPNC RN posting is initially listed as Nursing Framework LEVEL C.
• The actual Nursing Framework LEVEL and salary will be determined at the time of hire, with levels ranging from Level A to Level F.
Internship candidates will have a 5% payrate deduction while in the Internship as per the UMPNC contract.

### Required Qualifications•
To be considered for this position, candidates must meet all the following qualifications prior to the start date of employment:
• The candidate must be a Graduate Nurse or a newly licensed Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.
• The candidate must not have yet practiced as a Registered Nurse in a formal role.
Successful completion of the NCLEX must occur prior to the start date of the nurse internship.
• Applicants must be able to start at the identified start date in July, 2026.
• This position requires standing/walking/positioning/pulling/lifting of heavy patients and objects for long periods of time.

### Work Schedule

Hours per week: 36 hours
Shift: Primarily Nights or Evenings
Weekend Requirement: Up to 50% weekend requirement
Location: C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital
Start Date: Must be able to start in July, 2026.

Note: All new employees will be expected to float to a designated unit(s) in times of low census.

### Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U-M Professional Nurse Council (UMPNC) union. This agreement governs all aspects related to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
