Job Title: Mechanical Engineering Intern (Full-Time) – Olathe, KS

Overview:

Garmin International is seeking a highly motivated and talented full-time Mechanical Engineering Intern to join our team in Olathe, KS. In this pivotal role, you will be instrumental in the development of cutting-edge mechanical and electromechanical products and systems. Working under the guidance and supervision of experienced engineers, you will contribute to the entire product lifecycle, from initial concept generation to mass production. Essential Functions:

As a Mechanical Engineering Intern, your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Design and Development: Utilizing advanced Computer-Aided Design (CAD) systems, specifically SolidWorks, to design electronic packages for a diverse range of Garmin International products. This involves creating detailed models and assemblies that meet specific functional and aesthetic requirements.
  • Applied Engineering Principles: Applying a strong foundation in mathematics, science, and physics, coupled with excellent spatial reasoning and a pragmatic, problem-solving approach, to rapidly transition product concepts from initial ideas through to robust designs ready for mass production.
  • Diverse Component Design: Taking responsibility for the design of a wide array of components, demonstrating versatility across various manufacturing processes and materials. This includes:
    • Injection molded plastic parts for intricate enclosures and user interfaces.
    • Die cast aluminum and zinc components for structural integrity and heat dissipation.
    • Sheet metal fabrications for chassis and shielding.
    • CNC machined and screw machine fabricated parts requiring high precision.
    • Compression molded rubber components for sealing and impact protection.
    • Specialized components such as display elements, flex circuits, touch panels, speaker enclosures, and sophisticated mounting systems.
  • Part Specification and Sourcing: Identifying, specifying requirements for, and actively participating in the sourcing process for critical off-the-shelf and custom parts, including:
    • Various electrical connectors for reliable interconnections.
    • Acoustic components like speakers and microphones.
    • Display technologies such as LCDs and backlights.
    • User input mechanisms including keypads, switches, and rotary controls.
    • Specialized components such as electric motors, screw machined parts, batteries, and antennas.
  • Analysis and Testing: Conducting thorough analysis and hands-on testing of new processes, materials, and components to ensure performance, reliability, and compliance with specifications.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Actively interfacing and collaborating with various engineering disciplines, including Electrical Engineers, Industrial Designers, Tooling Engineers, and Process Engineers, to discuss basic designs, integrate requirements, and ensure seamless product development.
  • Documentation and Configuration Control: Maintaining meticulous configuration control of documentation for products currently in production, ensuring accuracy and accessibility. This also involves effective interfacing with available drafting and document control resources.

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for candidates who demonstrate a strong foundation and potential in engineering. Qualified applicants will possess:

  • Academic Enrollment: Currently enrolled in and have completed relevant coursework in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related engineering field.
  • Academic Excellence: A strong academic record, generally reflected by a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater. This demonstrates a solid understanding of fundamental engineering principles.
  • CAD Proficiency: Demonstrated knowledge and/or practical experience with Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software. Experience with SolidWorks is highly advantageous.
  • Relevant Experience: Previous relevant mechanical design experience, whether from academic projects, previous internships, or personal endeavors.
  • Technical Acumen: Proven strengths in core technical subjects including mathematics, science, and physics, coupled with practical application coursework that highlights problem-solving abilities.
  • PC/Windows Environment Experience: Familiarity and proficiency in a standard PC/Windows computing environment.

Desired Qualifications:

While not strictly required, candidates who possess the following will be given preference:

  • Outstanding Academics: A cumulative GPA of 3.5 or greater, indicating exceptional academic achievement.
