Job Description

Los Angeles Times Spring Internship Program

The Los Angeles Times is excited to continue its Spring Internship program, which began in 2021. This program is specifically designed to train and prepare local students for fruitful careers in journalism.

Program Structure & Duration:

  • Flexibility: The internship is structured to accommodate students continuing their education, offering both part-time and full-time options.
  • Start Dates: Interns can commence their position between January and March.
  • Total Hours: The entire internship comprises a total of 400 hours.
  • Duration Options:
    • 10-week internship if working 40 hours per week.
    • 20-week internship if working 20 hours per week.

Qualifications:

  • Must be a current student or recent graduate of a college or university.
  • Actively working toward an undergraduate or graduate degree.
  • Eligible to work in the U.S.
  • Recent Graduates: May qualify if they have finished school within six months of the internship start date.

Specific Requirements (Reporting and Visual Journalism Positions):

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must have access to a car in good working condition.

Experience Level & Expectations:

  • Internships are for students who have not worked professionally as staff journalists.
  • A basic understanding of the work is required, as interns are expected to “hit the ground running.”
  • A previous internship is recommended.

Training & Development:

The program includes training from the L.A. Times staff, aimed at developing, polishing, and elevating your work, thereby adding to your journalistic toolbox.

Location:

These internship positions will be based in El Segundo, Calif.

Compensation:

  • The reasonably expected pay for this position at the time of posting is $21.00 per hour.
  • Compensation takes into account factors such as skill set, experience, training, licenses, certifications, and other business or organizational needs.
  • It is not typical for individuals to be hired at or near the top of the range for the role.
