The Opportunity: Technical Direction Intern

Are you ready to contribute to the magic behind Disney’s world-renowned live shows? As a Technical Direction Intern with Disney Live Entertainment, you will play a pivotal role in the seamless integration of all design fields—from scenic and lighting to audio and special effects—that collectively weave the rich tapestry of our live storytelling. This includes iconic parades, captivating stage shows, and exhilarating special events both within and beyond Disney properties. We are seeking an individual with an innovative mindset, a profound passion for unparalleled Disney quality, and an unwavering commitment to magical creativity. You will be instrumental in upholding and consistently reflecting Disney’s rigorous standards across all technical and design documentation.

What You’ll Be Doing: Core Responsibilities

During this dynamic 6-month internship, your responsibilities will provide hands-on experience in the heartbeat of live entertainment production:

  • Collaborating closely with and supporting the Technical Director throughout the intricate technical production process, including the development of critical documentation, technical intent statements, and comprehensive drawing packages.
  • Conducting detailed on-site surveys to ensure optimal technical integration and feasibility for upcoming productions.
  • Engaging with diverse cross-functional teams, including creative designers, vigilant safety teams, expert engineers, and essential facility teams, fostering a collaborative environment.
  • Assisting with the meticulous updating of technical documentation packages, such as detailed scopes of work and deliverables matrices.
  • Aiding in essential design and technical research, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in live entertainment.
  • Creating and diligently maintaining crucial sustainment documentation to ensure the longevity and excellence of our productions.

Who We’re Looking For: Qualifications to Bring the Magic

Required Skills & Experience

  • Exceptional communication skills, both oral and written, coupled with strong interpersonal abilities for effective collaboration in a diverse team environment.
  • A proven and practical understanding of the performing arts industry, backed by tangible experience in theatre and/or live event production.
  • The agility to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, consistently meeting critical deadlines and key touch points.
  • Demonstrated leadership potential and an enthusiastic zeal for seamless team collaboration.
  • A keen ability to prioritize multiple tasks efficiently while maintaining the utmost confidentiality regarding sensitive information.
  • Proficiency across essential Microsoft Office Suite applications: Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Working knowledge of industry-standard drafting programs such as AutoCAD, Vectorworks, and Revit.

Preferred Attributes

Candidates possessing the following will be especially well-suited for this role:

  • Knowledge spanning Engineering, Architecture and Design, and Construction Management principles.
  • Practical fabrication skills, adding another dimension to your technical capabilities.
  • Prior experience in Project Management, demonstrating organizational prowess.
  • Direct experience in Design or Technical roles within a professional theatrical or live event setting.

Educational Background

  • Currently enrolled as a Junior, Senior, or Graduate student (MFA program), actively pursuing a degree in a technical design-related field.

Program Details & Eligibility Requirements

To be considered for this extraordinary internship opportunity, candidates MUST meet all of the following criteria:

  • Be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university, taking at least one class at the time of application submission, OR be actively participating in a Disney College Program or a Disney Internship.
  • Be at least 18 years of age by the start of the internship.
  • Possess unrestricted work authorization for the duration of the program.
  • Possess a valid US driver’s license and demonstrate the ability to safely operate a company vehicle when required.
  • Have not completed one year of continual employment on a previous Disney internship or Disney College Program.
  • Be able to commit to a consistent, reliable work schedule throughout the entire 6-month internship period (June 2026 – January 2027).
