Job Description
Job Title: T-STEP Student Intern
Program Overview:
The T-STEP program is a unique initiative designed to support the transition to adulthood for students aged 16-21 with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This program integrates a community college class focused on developing essential life and professional skills. T-STEP is a collaborative effort, partnering with:
- The University of North Carolina TEACCH Autism Program
- The North Carolina Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services (NCDVRS)
- North Carolina community colleges
- The Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program
Acceptance into the T-STEP program is a prerequisite for this internship, requiring registration and approval through both NCDVRS and TEACCH.
Internship Purpose:
T-STEP internships are specifically designed to provide practical experience, allowing students to apply and reinforce the skills acquired through the program curriculum. Interns will engage in a variety of duties, contributing to the operational needs of the department while fostering personal and professional growth.
Key Responsibilities & Duties:
The T-STEP student intern will provide valuable administrative assistance and support across a range of tasks. Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- General Office Support:
- Assisting with essential office functions such as filing, data entry, and preparing mailings.
- Maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the department workspace.
- Event & Project Assistance:
- Supporting the planning and execution of various projects or events.
- Client & Visitor Interaction:
- Greeting students and visitors in a professional and welcoming manner.
- Research & Information Management:
- Conducting research and/or reviewing information pertinent to curriculum development, marketing initiatives, or expanding the department’s knowledge base.
- Instructional & Administrative Support:
- Assisting with the creation and organization of instructional materials, including presentations (e.g., PowerPoints) and various documents.
- Performing other general administrative and supportive tasks or errands as needed.
- Data Management:
- Engaging in online data analysis and other data-related tasks.
- Logistical Support:
- Assisting with logistical duties such as stocking supply cabinets.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
To successfully perform the duties of this internship, candidates should possess the following:
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Basic verbal and written communication skills.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and integrity.
- Ability to multitask effectively in a dynamic environment.
Minimum Program & Eligibility Requirements:
Prospective interns must meet the following criteria:
- Program Acceptance: Must be officially accepted into the T-STEP program through NCDVRS and TEACCH.
- Age: Must be between the ages of 18 and 21 years old.
- Educational Status: Participants must be enrolled in the future-ready diploma track in high school OR have graduated with a regular high school diploma.
- Academic Readiness: Must demonstrate the ability to access and comprehend college-level materials.
Workload Expectation:
All student interns are expected to work 12 hours per VR/EIPD.
