Overview of the Role:

Navy Federal Credit Union is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Data Scientist Summer Associate to join their Workforce Intelligence (WFI) team within Contact Center Operations (CCO). This is a 12-week internship program running from May 2026 to August 2026, designed for graduate-level students passionate about data, analytics, and solving real-world business problems. Interns will work on impactful projects that drive strategic decision-making and operational efficiency across the organization.

The Workforce Intelligence (WFI) team is a cross-functional, highly technical group comprising Data Scientists, Data Analysts, Application Developers, Data Stewards, Technical Writers, and Lead Systems Analysts. It operates as a support team for both operational and analytical functions within Contact Center Operations. The team’s responsibilities include managing databases and servers, building and maintaining ETL pipelines, developing custom applications, automating manual workflows, and creating data models to generate actionable insights that identify opportunities for process improvement, efficiency gains, and strategic decision-making.

Current Data Science Projects that Summer Associates may contribute to include:

Battery Life Model: Aims to model employee retention probabilities using behavioral, performance, and engagement metrics to forecast attrition risk, helping leadership proactively address retention challenges.
FTE/Contractor Ratio Optimization: Evaluates historical staffing patterns, cost structures, and performance to determine the most effective balance between Full-Time Employees (FTEs) and Contractors for strategic workforce decisions.
CCO Scenario Simulator: An interactive tool allowing stakeholders to adjust variables (staffing, call volumes, service levels) to project impacts on metrics like Average Speed of Answer, Staffing Requirements, and workload projections, supporting data-driven scenario planning.
MSR Shift Optimization: Analyzes Member Services Representative (MSR) availability and preferences against service demand to identify opportunities for shift realignment, aiming to enhance employee satisfaction while maintaining service levels.

To qualify, applicants must be currently pursuing a graduate-level degree or planning to enroll, with an anticipated graduation date of December 2026 or later.

Key Responsibilities of the Summer Associate:

Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand business challenges and translate them into data-driven solutions.
• Perform data cleaning, preprocessing, and exploratory data analysis (EDA) to uncover insights.
Develop and deploy interactive dashboards and visualizations using tools like Power BI and Dash Apps.
• Write efficient and scalable code in Python and SQL for data manipulation and analysis.
• Apply statistical methods and machine learning techniques to model and predict business outcomes.
Document findings, methodologies, and present results to stakeholders clearly and compellingly.
• Contribute to the development of data pipelines and cloud-based analytics solutions.

Qualifications:

Must be currently enrolled in, or planning to enroll in, a graduate-level program (Master’s) in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, or a closely related field following completion of undergraduate studies.
Proficiency in Python and SQL.
Experience with data cleaning and exploratory data analysis (EDA).
Familiarity with data visualization tools such as Power BI and Dash.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with R programming.
• Background in statistics, mathematics, or machine learning.
• Exposure to big data technologies (e.g., Spark, Hadoop) and cloud platforms (e.g., Azure, AWS, GCP).
• Understanding of version control systems like Git.
