Job Description

About Company

Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI) is the organization seeking a Battery Mathematical Modeling Intern. While the specific mission of HATCI isn’t fully detailed in the provided text, it is clear they are focused on advanced technical development, specifically in the area of battery modeling for Hyundai and Kia. The role itself indicates a focus on developing a core battery modeling environment to analyze critical battery performance metrics.

Job Description, Detailed

This internship, scheduled for Summer 2026, is for a Battery Mathematical Modeling Intern at Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI). The primary goal of this role is to support the development of a core battery modeling environment. This environment will be crucial for the rapid analysis of key battery performance metrics, including energy efficiency, power capability, thermal performance, and degradation mechanisms.

WHAT YOU WILL DO (Responsibilities):

Implement and Validate Electrochemical Models:
• Implement physics-based models (e.g., P2D) or equivalent circuit models (ECM) for lithium-ion batteries within the modeling environment.
• Validate the performance of these models against experimental cell data across various operating conditions, such as different C-rates and temperatures.
Develop Thermal and Degradation Sub-models:
• Contribute to the integration and development of thermal sub-models.
• These sub-models will predict temperature distributions and associated degradation mechanisms (e.g., SEI growth, lithium plating) to enhance the environment’s capability for lifecycle analysis.
Automate and Optimize Simulation Workflows:
• Assist in creating automated data processing and simulation workflows.
• These workflows will utilize programming languages like Python or MATLAB.
• The aim is to enable rapid analysis of battery performance metrics, including energy efficiency and power capability.
Document and Support Model Use:
• Document the implemented models, validation results, and best practices for the modeling environment.
• Support the internal team in using the models for specific battery design and performance analysis tasks.

WHAT YOU WILL BRING TO THE ROLE (Qualifications):

Education: Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or related fields.
Foundational Knowledge: Foundational knowledge of electrochemical systems, lithium-ion battery fundamentals, cell-level behavior, and battery degradation mechanisms.
Technical Experience: Demonstrated experience in electrochemical or battery core model development and refinement. This includes experience with version control and visualization using Python and the PyBaMM framework.
Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills.

OTHER DETAILS:

Employment Eligibility: Candidates applying must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire.
Equal Opportunity: HATCI is an Equal Opportunity Employer, including Disabled and Veteran. It is also a VEVRAA Federal contractor.
