Job Description

This is an exciting opportunity for a long-term internship within Xcel Energy’s Operation Technology (OT) Support organization. This unique position is geared towards students seeking to immerse themselves in critical energy infrastructure projects.

Role and Team:
The successful candidate will join the IT-OT Modernization organization, specifically gaining access to work with the IT-OT Modernization (NSP/SPS – EMS Team). Within this team, the intern will focus on specific requirements within the EMS DB Team.

Internship Duration and Schedule:
The internship spans 18 months, with a flexible work schedule of 20-40 hours weekly. It offers the possibility of extension beyond the initial term, based on the intern’s successful performance and Xcel Energy’s business needs.

Start Date:
This position is slated to start in May 2026.

Key Learning and Responsibilities:
The internship is designed to provide significant exposure and development in key technological areas:
• SCADA EMS Construction Project Work: The intern will gain deep insight and exposure to the construction project work related to SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) EMS (Energy Management System).
• EMS DB Team Requirements: Learn and work on specific database requirements within the EMS DB Team.
• Technical Understanding: Develop skills for a comprehensive technical understanding of SCADA systems and EMS architecture.
• Project Implementation Support: Provide support with the implementation of construction projects.
• Daily Operations Support: Assist with daily tasks and address the needs of both the Transmission Operations and Commercial Operations teams.

Work Location:
The intern must be able to commute to one of the following Xcel Energy operation centers:
• 414 Nicollet Mall, Minneapolis, MN
• Denver, CO
• Amarillo Operation Center, TX

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this internship, candidates must meet the following criteria:
• Current Student Status: Must be a current student at the Sophomore or Junior level only.
• Academic Enrollment: Enrolled in an accredited college or university.
• Field of Study: Pursuing a degree in:
• Computer Science
• Management Information Systems
• Computer Engineering
• Engineering
• Mathematics
• Analytics
• Business
• Commute Ability: Able to commute to one of the specified Xcel Energy locations (MN, CO, or TX).
• Work Availability:
• Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week).
• Able to work part-time during the spring (up to 20 hours a week).
• Technical Proficiency: Proficient in Microsoft Office suite applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).
• Personal Attributes:
• Strong work ethic and initiative.
• Ability to work well in a team environment.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Must be able to prioritize tasks and possess strong organizational skills.

• High Academic Standing: A GPA of 3.0 or higher.

• Anticipated Starting Base Pay: The hourly wage for this position ranges from $17.00 to $27.20 per hour.
