Job Description: Management Intern (PART-TIME – TEMPORARY)

Job Title: Management Intern
Division: Information Technology (IT) Division
Employment Type: Part-Time – Temporary
Duration: Not to exceed one year. Appointments are for a limited duration, and incumbents are limited to working under 1,000 hours per fiscal year.

Compensation:
Hourly Rate (Undergraduate Students): $22.00
Hourly Rate (Graduate Students): $24.00

Recruitment Purpose:
This recruitment aims to fill one temporary Management Intern assignment within the IT Division and to establish a pool of qualified candidates for future assignments.

Summary of Position:
Under close supervision, the Management Intern provides short-term administrative, routine, technical, and para-professional support for a City department, division, function, and/or special project. The intern assists in performing research, conducting special projects, and carrying out miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Distinguishing Characteristics:
The Management Intern is a training-level classification designed for individuals currently enrolled in or who have recently completed a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree program. Interns assist with a wide variety of routine, technical, and para-professional level studies, research projects, and tasks. Graduate-level Management Interns are expected to operate with a greater degree of independence and discretion and handle duties of greater complexity.

Specific Focus for this IT Internship:
This internship specifically focuses on assisting with helpdesk inquiries and requests. Key responsibilities include providing technical support, training, and assistance to employees, explaining IT issues clearly, and implementing solutions in accordance with IT Department standards and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (may include, but are not limited to):
• Assist with helpdesk inquiries and support requests.
• Provide technical support to employees.
• Offer training and assistance on IT-related topics.
• Explain technical issues in an understandable way.
• Implement solutions based on IT Departmental standards and procedures.
• Ensure compliance with internal IT protocols while resolving issues.
• Perform administrative and clerical duties.
• May assist with the coordination of special events.
• Interact with members of the community, other City staff, elected officials, and businesses.

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines:
Required:
• Possession of a High School Diploma or GED.
• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Must be currently enrolled as a student in an undergraduate or graduate program at an accredited college or university *or• have recently graduated.

Preferred:
• Graduated with or pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or a closely related field.
• Possession of Information Technology related certifications.
• Work experience in Information Technology.

Knowledge of:
• City organization, operations, policies, and procedures.
• Principles and practices of office administration and telephone etiquette.
• General research and analysis methods and techniques.
• Records management principles.
• Basic computer skills and standard MS Office software applications.
• Customer service and public relations methods and practices.

Skill in:
• Operating a personal computer and utilizing a variety of business software.
• Organizing and maintaining departmental records and filing systems.
• Working effectively with others.
• Analyzing, interpreting, and making recommendations in accordance with laws, regulations, and policies.
• Presenting research findings and recommendations clearly and professionally.
• Following verbal and written instructions.
• Working independently.
• Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers and the public.
• Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
• Basic mathematics.

License and Certification Requirements:
• A valid California Driver’s License may be required.

Physical Demands and Working Environment:
Work is typically performed in a standard office environment. Occasional work may be required outdoors and/or at remote locations throughout the City.

Assignment Selection Process:
• Candidates must provide specific and complete details about their qualifications for the position. Incomplete information may lead to elimination.
