This is a Paid Internship for a Digital Services, Design Intern position, available in NYC or remote. The application period for this specific posting has closed.

The core of this internship involves applying design and data visualization principles to foreign policy content. The intern will be instrumental in making complex information accessible and engaging through visual mediums.

Major responsibilities of this position included (but were not limited to):

Assisting in the development and refinement of interactive data visualization, with a strong emphasis on clarity, usability, and user experience.
Creating compelling visual representations of foreign policy data sets utilizing scripting libraries, third-party tools, and industry-standard software.
Contributing to the creation of data-driven reports, presentations, and infographics, effectively translating complex information into easily digestible visual formats.
Supporting ongoing data visualization style initiatives, ensuring consistency and alignment with CFR’s visual identity and established data representation standards.
Participating in the development of animated data visualizations and/or interactive data-driven storytelling content.
Aiding in the design of data-centric materials and concept development for at least one CFR event and/or conference, creating impactful visual aids to support presentations.
Developing engaging data-driven visual content for CFR’s social media channels, crafting shareable graphics that effectively communicate key insights from foreign policy research.

Qualifications:

Educational Background:
Undergraduate student, currently majoring in visual communication design, data visualization, data journalism, or a closely related field.
• Applicants must have completed the equivalent of four semesters of college coursework (excluding AP classes from high school) by the time the internship commences.
Experience & Skills:
• Possession of relevant research experience in areas such as web design, UI/UX, graphic design, and/or data visualization.
• A portfolio is required to demonstrate design capabilities and previous work.
• Demonstrated strong attention to detail and resourcefulness.
Proficiency in business-level English and high-level writing.
Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred Technical Skills:
• Experience with Datawrapper.
• Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator.
• Experience with Python/R.
• Familiarity with Javascript (specifically D3.js, ObservableHQ).
