Job Description: Construction Engineering Internship Program (Project Intern)

Austin Commercial is seeking interns for its highly-ranked Construction Engineering Internship Program. This program offers intensive, real-world, hands-on jobsite experience directly from seasoned construction professionals at Austin’s commercial construction projects. The internship program was recognized as one of the Top 100 Internship Programs of 2024 by WayUp and Yello.

Types of Paid Internships Offered:
Fall 2025 – Paid internship program during the fall semester.
Spring 2026 – Paid internship program during the spring semester.
Summer 2026 – A paid, 12-week full-time internship program starting Monday, May 18, 2026, and running through Friday, August 7, 2026.

Potential Locations for Interns:
Texas (Austin/Dallas-Fort Worth/Houston)
Arizona (Phoenix Area)
Florida (Orlando Area)
Utah (Salt Lake City, Area)

Interns will:
• Have a hands-on, career-enhancing experience on heavy civil construction projects.
• Work and learn from experts in the business.
• Receive training in and use industry-specific software applications.
• Grow their professional network.

As an employee-owner hired for an internship, individuals will be given the title of “Project Intern.”

Potential Duties of a Project Intern:
• Processing submittals by reviewing, stamping, filing, and distributing them.
• Sending Requests for Information (RFIs) to architects and engineers.
• Keeping concrete, rebar, RFI, and plan logs up to date.
• Resolving problems generated from the plans and specifications.
• Establishing control points and lines using field instruments (level, theodolite, total station).
• Locating embeds in the slab and verifying embed locations per approved shop drawings.
• Assisting in locating openings in the structure and establishing vertical control for the structure.
• Locating other miscellaneous items in the field (curbs, inlets, etc.).
• Documentation: updating and distributing construction drawings, specifications, shop drawings, and samples.
• Aiding with Quality Control (QC) inspections utilizing BIM 360 Field onsite.
• Verifying pre-pour checklists and checking proper formwork framing/shoring installation per approved shop drawings.
• Participating in and aiding with weekly safety meetings as requested, including writing meeting minutes.
• Leading project orientation and maintenance of logs.
• Assisting with maintaining project look-ahead schedules.
• Assisting with trade contractor coordination and scheduling.
• Verifying proper construction techniques per plans and specifications (raising concerns and following through with trades until corrected).
• Maintaining city inspection records and walking with the Superintendent during inspections.
• Other miscellaneous duties as defined by the Project Manager or Superintendent.

Internship Structure and Expectations:
• Project Interns can expect a preliminary meeting with their supervisor to discuss the goals, expectations, and desired outcomes of the internship.
• Employee-owners participating in an internship will be reviewed upon completion, with the review serving as a tool to communicate successes and learning outcomes.
• The supervisor will complete any necessary paperwork for the Project Intern’s school or university.
• Individuals hired as interns will be classified as Temporary employee-owners as defined in Policy A-5.
• Temporary employee-owners are not eligible for vacation pay, holiday pay, or other benefits listed in Policy A-5.
• Temporary employee-owners are expected to adhere to the same policies and procedures as regular, full-time employee-owners.
• Interns are expected to work a regularly scheduled workweek of 40 hours or more. Overtime will be paid for any hours exceeding 40 at a rate of one and one-half times the regular rate.
