Job Title: Costume Shop Student Employee (Internship)
Department: University of Michigan-Flint Department of Theatre and Dance
Employment Type: This is a temporary, part-time position, specifically considered an internship.
Job Summary: The department is looking for energetic, detail-oriented students to work in its costume shop. This role offers students the opportunity to gain real, industry-quality hands-on experience by working directly on actual productions, all while being supervised by professionals. The experience gained is highly valuable and can be listed on a resume for future job applications and graduate school, being considered a crucial component for successful theatre and/or dance majors.
Core Responsibilities: The costume shop is integral to creating garments for the University’s five main stage productions across drama, musical theatre, and dance. Specific duties for this position include:
Garment construction: Building costumes and garments.
Laundry: Handling and maintaining costume laundry.
Craft work: Performing various craft-related tasks required for costumes.
Stock organization/maintenance: Organizing and maintaining the inventory within the costume shop.
Required Qualifications:
• Must be a UM-Flint student.
• Possess sewing experience.
• Demonstrate a strong interest in hands-on learning.
• Availability to work on weekends and evenings during production periods.
Preferred Qualifications:
Current Theatre Design and Technology majors will be given preference during the selection process.
Modes of Work:
• This position requires a fully onsite presence. Work must be conducted at a designated U-M owned or leased work location, either within or outside the State of Michigan. This role is not eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work.
