### Job Description: Communications & Public Involvement Intern – Summer 2026
This opportunity is for a temporary internship position within WSP USA’s Advisory & Planning Team, based out of their San Francisco, CA office. It is part of the WSP Summer Internship Program, designed to provide hands-on, meaningful work experience to enhance education and professional aptitude.
Internship Program Details:
• Duration: A 12-week program scheduled to start on May 18, 2026, with some flexibility on the individual start date.
• Benefits: Interns gain exposure to real projects and work alongside senior staff. The Developing Professionals Network offers mentorship, networking opportunities, and lifelong career connections.
• Eligibility: Seeking individuals currently enrolled in an Undergraduate or Graduate degree program.
• Assistance: No relocation or housing assistance is associated with this internship.
Key Responsibilities (Your Impact):
The intern will support a variety of public and stakeholder engagement tasks with a focus on developing technical, communications, and organizational skills. This includes:
• Learning basic principles of community engagement and effective communication.
• Creating communication materials such as presentations, fact sheets, infographics, videos, web updates, and summaries to inform the public about transportation, sustainability, and land use planning projects.
• Supporting the communications team in developing and executing public information and communication plans, including traditional and social media purchases.
• Assisting project teams with all communications and outreach efforts, which may involve:
• Creating and organizing public meeting documentation and materials.
• Attending public events.
• Coordinating with technical teams (e.g., transportation planners, civil engineers).
• Implementing social media plans.
• Communicating with community stakeholders.
• Supporting implementation strategies to engage all communities, especially underserved and marginalized people, impacted by infrastructure projects, using diverse tools (workshops, public meetings, market research, advertising campaigns, visuals).
• Completing assigned task training.
• Exercising responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct.
• Performing additional responsibilities as required.
Required Qualifications (Who You Are):
• Education: Actively enrolled in an accredited Undergraduate program in Communications, Public Health, Urban Planning, Journalism, Public Affairs, Government Relations, or a related field, with an anticipated graduation date of August 2026 or later.
• Age: Must be 18 or older.
• Interest: Demonstrated interest in public and stakeholder engagement or a related field, with a strong desire to advance relevant skills.
• Communication Skills:
• Competent interpersonal and communication skills, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to both engineering and non-engineering audiences.
• Superior command of the English language, with excellent written/oral communication and proofing skills.
• Experience with writing for multiple audiences and presenting technical concepts clearly.
• Diplomacy: Comfortable showing discretion and diplomacy with diverse community members.
• Work Ethic: Capable of taking direction from leadership, mentors, and managers to execute projects.
• Technical Proficiency: Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.
• Safety & Conduct: Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety, and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
• Authorization: Must be authorized to work in the United States at the start of the internship.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Higher Education: Actively enrolled in an accredited Masters or PhD program in the specified fields, with an anticipated graduation date of August 2026 or later.
• Software Experience: Experience using Microsoft Suite and Adobe Creative Suite.
• Prior Experience: Prior internship and leadership involvement on campus.
• Language Skills: Fluency in other languages.
Compensation:
• Expected Pay: The hourly pay range is $19.13 – $30.00 per hour.
