This is an internship position focused on career development in the tourism industry, offering first-hand experience in promoting the City of Wauwatosa as a tourism destination.

Role: Tourism Intern
Purpose: To conduct research and work on projects for the Tourism Specialist, gaining knowledge and experience essential for career development in the tourism industry.
Schedule: Approximately 15 hours per week, Monday through Friday.
Duration: The internship will run from September to December, with a possibility of extension into 2026.
Compensation: The hourly rate for this position is $16.39.

Key Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions):

• Conducts studies, performs research, collects data, and prepares reports on various departmental activities and special projects.
• Assists in managing the Discover Wauwatosa website, focusing on content and functionality.
• Receives, directs, and helps resolve inquiries from citizens or visitors.
• Reviews and edits departmental reports.
• Observes experienced workers to learn methods, procedures, and standards required for job performance.
• Completes other administrative duties as assigned.

Education And/or Experience Requirements:

Education: Must be currently enrolled in an associate’s or bachelor’s degree program in tourism, public administration, marketing, or a related field.
Experience: Prior customer service work experience is preferred.

Licenses, Certifications, And Other Requirements:

• Requires a valid Driver’s License.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Qualifications:

• A strong interest in pursuing a career in the tourism industry and in local government.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Required customer service and interpersonal skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office software, specifically Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Prior experience with PowerPoint, website content management software, and database software is preferred.

Physical Requirements:

The role frequently requires sitting, twisting, and reaching, along with using hands for various tasks. The employee must regularly communicate (talk and hear) in person, meetings, and via telephone, interacting with city management, employees, officials, contractors, vendors, and the public. It involves reading and interpreting data, information, and documents, as well as analyzing and solving problems. Occasionally, standing, walking, and reaching with hands and arms are required. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The ability to safely lift and carry up to 10 pounds occasionally is also necessary.

Work Environment:

The primary work environment is a standard office setting, which is typically quiet. However, various activities, research, and assignments may require working at or in other locations within the City of Wauwatosa.
